Education

Practicing as a Physiatrist requires a broad range of knowledge across multiple medical disciplines; including, Neurology, Orthopedics, General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Respirology, and many others. Physiatrists must also be knowledgeable about the practices and treatments offered through Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, and adaptive technologies.

Physiatry is a rapidly growing and exciting field that is in high demand in many regions across Canada and globally. The University of British Columbia offers Royal College Accredited Post Graduate training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, elective opportunities for in-province, out-of-province, and out-of-country medical learners at the resident and medical student level. The division also offers a Neurorehabilitation and Spasticity and fellowship.

Physiatry Residents 2019

The University of British Columbia Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program is a five year, Royal College accredited medical residency program. Our program offers a comprehensive learning experience to prepare graduates for a clinical practice as Physiatrists.

Our program selects TWO qualified applicants each year. Candidates are welcome from medical schools across Canada.

Our program has fully transitioned to Competency by Design. All incoming residents will be integrated into this curriculum.

Elective Post Graduate Resident Training Opportunities

The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers 4 week elective experience blocks to both in and out of province medical residents.

Prospective elective students are responsible for identifying and contacting the division member with whom they wish to work. University of British Columbia based Medical Residents may arrange electives through their own Department/Divisions.

Out of province medical elective residents must follow the application procedures outlined on the UBC Postgraduate Visiting Electives site.

Neurorehabilitation and Spasticity Fellowship

This is a 12-month fellowship program focusing on rehabilitation of adults with disabilities from brain and neuromuscular conditions. Training will be provided in the neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) programs within the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

This fellowship training is designed for those who have already completed specialty training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and have completed at least a year of physiatry practice. The fellowship will require a contractual agreement with the candidate’s sponsoring agency and approval from the Postgraduate Medical Education office at UBC.

Undergraduate Medical Education

A flexible 2 – 4 week rotation is available within the Division, which provides a broad exposure to the field of PM&R. The student may rotate through different inpatient rehabilitation units, one week at a time. There is opportunity to arrange outpatient clinics during the rotation in addition to the ones included at the teaching hospital sites. Students wishing to focus on any particular area in PM&R during the rotation are asked to communicate directly with the undergraduate medical education coordinator: Dr. Grace Li.

Elective rotations may be scheduled at a variety of hospital sites and outpatient clinics where Division members practice.

Application Procedure

University of British Columbia medical students will be advised by the undergraduate office as to the availability of the elective period determined for them.

Out of province medical students must apply for electives following the process outlined on the UBC Undergraduate Medical Education – Visiting Electives website. The application process uses the Association of the Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Student Portal. Applicants must ensure their applications are received at least 12 weeks prior to the planned elective period.
